The Jones Act provides a seaman a cause of action for personal injury or death. Persons working on the high seas, rivers or lakes have specific rights covered under the Jones Act. Types of wrongful acts include slippery surfaces on the vessel, faulty equipment, untrained employees of the vessel, and unseaworthy vessels. An employee injured under the Jones Act may be entitled to compensation for lost wages, often referred to as maintenance and cure, medical expenses, and pain and suffering.
