Serious Birth Injuries including Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy is a condition caused by damage to the brain, usually occurring either before, during or soon after birth. Often times a lack of oxygen during birth is a chief cause of Cerebral Palsy. This may result from a number of different complications, including, failure to perform a timely cesarean, c-section, excessive force or use of forceps or vacuum, cord entanglement or excessive Pitocin.
An infant's symptoms resulting from a lack of oxygen during birth may include cerebral edema, seizures, low apgar scores, and evidence of trauma.
Cerebral Palsy can be classified in to three groups:
Spastic Cerebral Palsy is due to upper motor neuron involvement and may affect motor function. The affected limbs may be stiff and difficult to move.
Athetoid Cerebral Palsy usually occurs from basal ganglia involvement. The uncontrolled movements may affect the extremities or proximal parts of the limbs and trunk.
Ataxic Cerebral Palsy is not as common as the other two classifications. It results from damage to the cerebellum and causes weakness, difficulty with coordination and problems with depth perception.
